By Metro
The Metro uses fare cards exclusively and station managers are present near the fare machines. Fares vary by distance and hour of the day. The minimum fare is $1.35 and $5 on a card will take you almost everywhere, anytime. Amounts can be added at both entrance and exit fare machines. If the fare is used up at the end of your trip, the exit machine will eat your card. Just keep going.
Bicycles are allowed on the Metro via elevators on weekends and during off-peak hours on weekdays.
Go to the Takoma Station on the Red Line.
Exit and turn right when you reach the sidewalk. You will be facing west.
Go west on Cedar to the street light mid-block and turn south toward the street.
You will be facing one of DC’s characteristic more-than-two-streets-crossing intersections, this one is Blair, Cedar, and Fourth Street. The street in front of you is Fourth Street and you are only a block and a half from Takoma Village.
Cross and walk straight south a very short distance to a second light.
Cross and continue to Butternut Street.
Cross and pass the historic Takoma Theater.
Takoma Village is the next building.
By Car
Because a wheel of diagonal streets with state names is imposed on a grid of number and alphabet-related street names, you can easily get lost in the resulting 6-way intersections. Even using a Google map, an intersection in person can look very differently than on a neatly drawn map. The easiest approach for first timers if you are coming from out of town is:
Take the Beltway, Route 495, to Georgia Avenue Exit 31B. Route 97 South.
Continue south on Georgia through Silver Spring, Georgia becomes Route 29.About 1.5 miles further you will see Walter Reed Army Hospital on your right.
Slow down and look for Butternut Street on your left.
Turn left on Butternut if you see it in time.
If you don’t, continue one block to Aspen and turn left.Go east to Fourth Street. Turn south from Butternut, north from Aspen.
Takoma Village is the only apartment complex in that block.
There is normally on street parking available but it is zoned parking so the limit during the day is 2 hours. Your host may have or borrow a guest parking pass or a parking place in our parking lot for you. Ask in advance.
Enjoy your trip!
