Awards and Recognition

The Committee of 100 on the Federal City is the oldest area planning organization in the District. It was founded by Frederic Delano (cousin of Franklin Delano Roosevelt) in 1923 to protect and enhance Washington's historic distinction, natural beauty and overall livability.

The Committee of 100 on the Federal City will present its first annual Vision Awards to people and projects exemplifying vision in planning and design in Washington, including Mayor Anthony Williams and Planning Director Andrew Altman for their outstanding leadership in planning the new Anacostia Waterfront.

The awards ceremony and cocktail will be Thursday, May 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the historic foyer of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Williams and Mr. Altman, in addition to D.C. Council members and Board of Trade President Bob Peck, are expected to attend.

The Vision Awards will also honor the following people and projects:

  • Leadership on the renovation of the John A. Wilson Building:
    Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Board of Trade President Robert Peck,
    D.C. Council Chairman Linda Cropp, D.C. Councilmembers,
    D.C. Council Secretary Phyllis Jones, and commentator Mark Plotkin.
  • Joseph Passonneau for his superb and longstanding work as an architect, planner, transportation designer and publisher in the Nation's Capital.


  • Judy Scott Feldman for her initiative and persistence in protecting the National Mall.

One example of excellence and vision in each ward was honored:

  • Ward 2: The Millennium Arts Center (pre-redistricted boundaries)
